Since its inception, Five Pack Creative has been involved with the creation of the award-winning Hours Time Tracking app; and what a journey it’s been. Originally a joint venture, Hours has garnered praise from publications such as Forbes, TechCrunch, 9to5Mac, and others, it’s been featured by Apple on several occasions, and has earned hundreds of 5-star App Store reviews.

Hours iPhone App

On July 17, 2014, Hours debuted as a beautifully simplistic iPhone app that allowed users to track their time retroactively via a unique timeline or in real-time by simply tapping a button to start a timer and tapping again to stop it. The app was an immediate success thanks to an efficient UX, beautiful UI, and high-quality engineering. Speaking of engineering, time is not an easy thing to master – but we did it!

Our developers were tasked with finding graceful solutions for core functionality, as well as for edge cases like timers running after midnight, leap years, changing time zones, and more. Once those issues were resolved, we began adding major updates, including an Hours Widget, Hours Cloud, In-App purchases (subscription-based), Hours for Apple Watch (OS 1, 2, & 3), and even Hours Web with special features for teams, cloud-based data synchronization, and more.

As you can imagine, an app with so many moving pieces requires a lot of testing. Our quality assurance analysts work closely with our development team to understand how the app evolves as new features are added. To ensure that updates and changes to the app don’t negatively affect other areas our team helped build Hours into a beautiful collection of amazing time tracking tools.

What process does FPC take to ensure this app the highest quality?

We work closely with the development team to understand any changes in the apps so that we test not only the planned changes but also the way in which those changes may affect other areas of the apps. We also have an extensive suite of tests that we run prior to each release for both the web app and the iOS app.

What challenges come from testing an application that spans multiple platforms/devices?

There are a large number of scenarios where the data must sync between the phone, the watch and the web app. This yields many potential failure states that must be tested. Any application that performs these types of synchronization tasks are quite complex. To mitigate this, we have documented these scenarios and test them prior to each release.

 

What was the result/outcome for you and the client?

A reduced number of sync issues that continues to improve upon each release.
