American Airlines

In 2011, tech-forward American Airlines approached Five Pack Creative to develop their client-based app for the iPad. American Airlines already had a successful iPhone app, but was using the same app for the relatively new iPad. At the time, the app didn’t translate well to the iPad, whose increased screen size warranted a customized experience of its own.

Jerry Beers, co-founder of Five Pack Creative, was thrilled to be able to work with the company. Beers expands, “Despite their size, American Airlines is incredibly fast moving with their mobile technology. they’re always early adopters of new Apple platforms and features and are constantly working to stay ahead of the technology curve. It’s refreshing.” says Beers

One of our longest-engaged clients, American Airlines is incredibly forward-thinking when it comes to cutting-edge technology. A consistent early-adopter, American Airlines has always insisted on utilizing Apple’s latest features and devices. So much so, they’ve even been featured on stage at WWDC, Apple’s yearly developer conference, for being one of the first to develop a robust app for the Apple Watch.

Working closely with the team at American Airlines, Five Pack Creative constructed a gorgeous, cutting-edge app for the iPad. The new app had a layout and navigation designed specifically for the iPad user. Since then, American Airlines and Five Pack Creative have constructed a flexible interface so both devices have the same experience, but the layout fits beautifully with each device. They have also helped craft the Android experience and continue to help manage American’s iOS apps.

Working with such a tech-forward company has been a wild ride. Beers says with a laugh, “It keeps us on our toes. We’re always pushing at the very edge of technology – working and reworking, creating and reacting to new mobile capabilities. It’s exciting.”

American Airlines has been with the Five Pack Creative family for a long time. Before FPC grew into the team it is today, Beers was an on-site independent contractor working to develop apps when apps were fairly new. Through his time at American Airlines, and his experience with other contracting positions, it became apparent to him that it was difficult for big companies to find experienced mobile talent since the field was so young. Beers expands, “I saw a pattern where companies needed to quickly develop something for mobile, and each was trying to build their own team to accomplish it. I knew I could solve this problem for them, and built Five Pack Creative into a team of expert developers, designers, QA analysts, and project managers that I could bring with me to each project.” American Airlines has since become Five Pack Creative’s largest client to date.

After its inception, and by way of “augmented engineering” a.k.a. staff augmentation, Five Pack Creative has enjoyed helping American Airlines stay ahead of the curve by helping rewrite the American Airlines iPad app, assisting with the early adoption of Passbook and 3D Touch – and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Having clients like AA, who recognize the fast-paced, ever-changing world of software, not only keeps us constantly aware of the latest and greatest world-changing technologies but also ensures that we know how to use them.

TO THIS DAY, WE CONTINUE WORKING WITH AMERICAN AIRLINES TO HELP THEM REMAIN A LEADER IN TECHNOLOGY. WE ARE EXCITED TO BE PART OF SUCH AN AMAZING TEAM AND WE CAN’T WAIT TO SEE WHAT COMES NEXT!
